- The Right Tools: A quality pin brush combined with a metal greyhound comb works wonders for everyday brushing. Always use a line-brushing technique to get all the way down to the skin, rather than just skimming the top layer.
- Pro Tip: Never brush a dry, tangled coat! Spray a light leave-in detangling conditioning spray before combing through to protect the hair shaft from snapping.
Ear Care: Protecting Those Iconic Floppy Ears
A Cavalier’s long, framed ears are arguably their most famous feature — but they also trap heat and moisture easily, creating a breeding ground for yeast and ear infections.
- Weekly Checks: Gently lift the ear flap to check for redness, buildup, or unusual odors once a week.
- Drying After Bathing or Swimming: Always ensure the inner ear canal is completely dry after baths or rainy outdoor walks.
- Keeping Them Clean: Long ear feathering often finds its way into water bowls. Using a snood during mealtime or choosing a narrow, elevated water bowl can keep those silky ear tips clean and dry.

1. The Classic Natural Trim (Breed Standard)
Traditionally, Cavaliers are meant to be shown with a natural coat — meaning no heavy clipping or shaving. In this style, we focus on a thorough bath, blow-out, pad clearing, sanitary trim, and a very subtle neatening of the feet (“grinch feet” hair) and tail to keep the silhouette clean while preserving their regal look.
2. The Practical Outline Trim
For owners who love the long-coat look but want fewer everyday tangles, an outline trim is a great option. We lightly shape the leg feathering, neaten up the underline, and trim the chest area to prevent debris from clinging during walks.
3. The Contour Trim
For a polished, clean look that follows the natural anatomy of your dog, the Contour Trim is an excellent choice. Rather than shaving or drastically shortening the coat, we use hand-scissoring or light guard comb work to trim back excess length along the silhouette while preserving the breed’s soft, natural flow. It keeps the coat looking beautifully shaped, manageable, and neat without losing its characteristic character.
A Note on Shaving: While shorter trims are totally fine, we generally avoid shaving Cavaliers down to the skin unless necessary for severe matting. Keeping a comfortable length protects their delicate skin from sun exposure and temperature shifts.
Bathing & Paw Care
- Bathing Frequency: Regular professional bathing every 4 to 6 weeks keeps their skin hydrated and their coat flowing freely. - Nail Trimming & Filing: Regular nail maintenance every 3 to 4 weeks ensures proper posture and keeps pressure off their joints. Long nails do real damage over time, and Cavaliers’ feathered feet hide overgrowth well.
