Cavapoo Grooming Guide: Coat Care, Fluffy Teddy Bear Trims & At-Home Maintenance

If you’ve taken a walk through central Ohio lately, chances are you’ve fallen under the spell of a Cavapoo. With their soulful eyes, playful personalities, and sweet teddy-bear faces, this Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Poodle mix is officially stealing hearts everywhere—including ours at Designer Paws Salon!

One of our absolute favorite things about grooming Cavapoos in our salons is their soft, bouncy, bubbly coat. That unique texture gives us the ultimate canvas to craft some of the cutest haircuts in town.

Sculpting the Ultimate “Living Doll” Look

Cavapoos are famous for their coat versatility. Because their fur offers a blend of soft volume and bouncy curl, our master groomers can hand-sculpt them into adorable, doll-like teddy bears.

When creating that signature fluffy look, we pay close attention to precision scissoring:

  • Round, Plush Muzzles: Carefully hand-trimmed to highlight that sweet, innocent “living doll” face.

  • Full, Soft Ears: Framed to accentuate their bouncy energy without pulling down their expression.

  • Teddy Bear Legs: Scissored into full, uniform cylinders that give them a plush, balanced appearance.

Whether you prefer a long, soft-contoured style or a tight, manageable teddy trim, our goal is to bring out your pup’s unique personality and inner plush toy!

Fluffy Dream vs. Low-Maintenance: The Choice Is Yours

We often hear pet parents ask: “Can my Cavapoo keep a long, super-fluffy haircut, or do they have to be shaved down short?”

The truth is, if that super-cute, fluffy haircut is what you want, that’s exactly what we can do! However, keeping that high-volume look requires a partnership between your grooming appointments and your home routine.

Maintaining Length at Home

Cavapoo coats combine silky spaniel hair with dense poodle curls, making them prone to hidden mats close to the skin. To keep your dog’s coat long, soft, and mat-free between salon visits, consistency at home is key:

  1. Commit to Line Brushing: Simply running a brush over the top layer of fur leaves tangles behind underneath. Separate the fur with one hand down to the skin, and brush small sections outward from the roots.

  2. Never Skip the Metal Comb: After slicker-brushing, always follow up with a metal greyhound comb. Work it gently through every section—especially high-friction areas like the armpits, behind the ears, and legs. If the comb catches, a mat is forming!

  3. Never Wash a Matted Coat: Water acts like a shrink-wrap on tangles, tightening minor knots into solid felt. Always ensure your Cavapoo is completely brushed out before bath time at home.

When a Reset is Needed

Life gets busy, and mats happen! If tangles become tight or uncomfortable for your pup, a shorter trim or tactical shave-down is always a safe, comfortable option. A shorter haircut resets the coat, keeps your dog happy, and gives you a clean slate to start fresh with your brushing routine.
